WEDDING DAY LAMENT
What if our children, overcoming reason,
take it into their heads to violate sense
and marry?
They will forget the lessons of their parents' marriage:
vituperation, anger, the endless revenge that
works itself out in nothing but money
even when there isn't any.
i can barely remember her face
but can recall the faces of those who came
before and those who came during and after,
But I pay only for her.
Will I have to have the first dance
with her? Can either of us stand it,
to touch as though touch were
some sort of penance,
of skin-blistering forgiveness
albeit momentary,
or will it be a stuff-armed
ritual tango surrounded
by swirling bridal gowns
and formals, neither of us
daring to look at the other
the ultimate human sacrifice,
the DJ playing "Paint It Black"
as we slide on grease
across the floor?
