Position: Department Chair, Visual Communication Design
Rank: Associate or Full Professor
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
Appointment: Beginning August 2011

Herron School of Art and Design is seeking an experienced leader to
fill the Chair position in the Department of Visual Communication
Design. Ideal candidates must demonstrate distinguished records of
nationally or internationally recognized work in research, practice
and/or teaching. Individuals with practical or research expertise in
the areas of Transformation Design, User Experience Design and Design
for Understanding are especially sought. Candidates must demonstrate
the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships within the
school, the university and professional community in order to build
upon the strengths of the department's faculty and curriculum.
Responsibilities:
Assist the Dean in the promotion of the mission and goals of the school
Work effectively with faculty and staff on matters relating to
curriculum, scheduling, supervision and the assignment of physical
facilities, and student issues and concerns in the areas of Visual
Communication Design.
Recruit, supervise and conduct annual performance evaluations of
faculty within the Department of Visual Communication Design
Represent the School on various assignments throughout the University
and Community
Work with the Dean and School's Fiscal Officer on planning,
administering and monitoring the Visual Communications Design
department budget
Develop programs and collaborative opportunities within the school and
community
Establish and maintain relationships in education, practice and public
communities at national and international levels.
Teach 10 contact hours per semester at the graduate or undergraduate
level.
Qualifications:
Requires 2-years of administrative experience at the department chair
level in visual arts and/or design unit within a higher education
setting. Experience should include budgeting, curriculum planning,
faculty scheduling and evaluation; the ability to work in
collaboration with the faculty, the student body, and administration;
and the capacity to provide effective academic leadership.
Candidate should have a terminal degree in his or her field of
expertise related to Visual Communication Design and should qualify
for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor.

About the Department
The Department of Visual Communication Design has an established
reputation for research that advances designing as a collaborative
process for identifying root problems and facilitating meaningful
solutions to complex issues. Student attainment of essential
competencies is achieved through the recognition that 'students will
enter the field expected to address multiple design functions and
responsibilities, including form making and strategy.' (NASAD) The
department includes ten full time faculty members who teach 130 full-
time students in a "residential" studio context.
