Thanks José,
I have yet to see the film, but your comments have just moved it to the top of my list.
The scene I am currently examining to set the tone of my discussion of "queers seeing queers" is from GO FISH, about 13 mins in, when Ely and Max go to see a movie and the discuss the film. WE never see the film, only their departure for the theater (assumed from the narrative context), a transitional montage, then their return and discussion. I am extremely interested in the function of that "missing" scene of seeing them see the film.
again, thanks,
Brian

Dear Colleagues,
A propos "The kids are all right" I believe there a few points to be made, regarding the depiction of the so-called "queer" characters -- in this case, the two women and their sexuality.
I know it may seem amusing at first, but...
The movie is adamant when it refers to the sexual dissatisfaction (rather frustration) of the two women, their use of gay male porn to get turned on (which result into a brief yet grotesque sex scene) and, most of all, when it delves into the several, lengthy (and yes, hot) scenes of heterosex. These scenes are further reinforced by the presence of the peeping (supposedly) heterossexual Mexican gardener. Overall, the film suggests that for real sexual satisfaction women (should they call themselves lesbian or not) have to resort to men.
Which makes me think: can those characters be considered "queer spectators"? Isn't that film ultimately catering to the consecration of heterossexual/hom ophobic ideas of what good sex is supposed to be? In other words, what I am trying to say is that any consideration of that film should come framed by a criticism of the politics of representation embedded in its narrative.
Now, if you are referring to the scene in which the teenage kids find out their mothers' gay male porn dvd (plus dildo), I believe that was the clearest example of that film's privileged adressee: the heterossexual public. The kids' bewilderment becomes, in that sense, "our own".
best regards and congratulations for the list,
José
PS I'd think that Moore and Benning (not to mention Ruffalo), instead of thinking they are doing their share for the gay community, would have read their scripts more carefully. Why do we tend to believe stars are smarter than they really are?...
