Dear colleagues,
Last days an interesting proposal arrived to me from a younger phd student
in our department concerning the possibility of starting a "mini-research
project" in the field of osteology.
It is about trying to establish feasible methods of identification and
distinction of roedeer (capreollus) bones from the ones of domestic
capriovids.
Of course I am aware of some morphological gross-anatomic features (I have
faced "some" during the ellaboration of my phd thesis on roman
archaeozoology and most recently in some cases of forensic importance) but
now the ideea would be to try to find, apart from these known anatomical
features, another approaces in these differentiation aspects.
The next stage would be trying to find osteometrical differences and then
some minimalistic structural elements that could lead to a certain
diagnosis, especially for the forensic importance- (lately it seems that
police calls on our department in order to stop poachers from hunting out of
the hunting season-) here I am talking about ultrastructural differences as
the osteonic system.
So after this long introduction, my question would be if you can guide me
through the literature in order to establish if the project can become a
serious one...any papers would be more than welcome..btw..I remember Kim
Dammers doing something in the field of ultrastructural differencen a couple
years ago....
Thank you all very much!
Alex
