medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
In later medieval armies there were no regiments. Every group of soldiers,
whether on foot or on a horse gathered around the banner of its lord, and
these groups were ordered in batallions (usually three). So, that's before
the fighting starts.
Don't, please, make the mistake to think that TSM portrayed a real
occurrence. I would say: on the contrary.

This was brought home to me by Braveheart. I never really understood
Trooping the Colors until the color sergeant (?) galloped along the lines
with a standard and the soldiers from his regiment stepped out to follow
him. Makes perfect sense in a semi-literate society, as well as one without
cell phones.
Best,
Erica
