Again late offerings but Nolan's The Dark Night and the Wachowski bros The Matrix both offer 'extreme overheads". Cynically I think they may not serve any intended aesthetic purpose. On the Other hand both films suggest that we have lost sight of our moral compass and the only way to redeem is to take a macro look at the world. Now I think Hitchcock's shot in The Birds does intend that, but I cannot vouch for the others.
