Dear All--
To twist this thread a bit, I would bring up the single most important sentence ever written in philosophy,
“Everyone will readily agree that it is of the highest importance to know whether we are not duped by morality.” ~Levinas, Preface to Totality and Infinity.
It is so because both philosophy AND film have failed to ever attempt to address what lies behind this simple sentence.
Philosophy subsumes it. Film studies ignores it.
So, even more importantly than ask Can film do philosophy, I would ask, "Can film do ethics?"
And, yes, I am being only slightly facetious.
for the wisdom of love,
Brian
