I think an unsung gem of academic writing would be George Gopen. He's in the US, but his book _Expectations_ is a real eye-opener. Not cheap even in paperback, but worth it in the way that reading John Swales was worth it. If you haven't already connected the dots this way (and most people haven't) it's a game changer.
