Thanks so much for getting back to me.
We currently extend loans over the vacation.
We are looking at this in response to complaints from students and staff. We have an increasing number of students (Doctoral (including PGCE), Summer School and International Summer School) for whom the notion of the traditional “term time” is not applicable. Students from these categories (and others) have complained that they need to have access to our library resources all year, especially during the summer. Staff supporting these groups of students have also approached the library with concerns over access to resources.
Do you get complaints about items being recalled when patrons are not able to return them easily, if they are away from the University during vacation?
I will feedback any data I manage to collate from this posting, and let you know what decision we come to at our University.
Thanks again,
Kathy

Subject: Re: Lending Items over Vacation
Hi Kathy,
In answer to your questions:
1) Do you extend your loan periods for all patrons over the vacation period? (Example: 4 week loan item is checked out the last day of term in June and is due back in the first week of term in October)
Answer: Yes
2) Do you keep your loan periods the same over the vacation? (Example: 1 week loan due back in 1 week; 4 week loan due back in 4 weeks)
Answer: Our Masters projects are still 7 day loan and the 1 day loans stay as 1 day loan. All other loan periods are extended for the summer vacation
3) If you extend your loans over the vacation, do you allow these items to be reserved? (Example: Item due back Oct, patron places a reserve, due date remains the same)
Answer: Yes
4) If you extend your loans over the vacation, do you allow these items to be reserved and possibly "recalled"? (Example: Item due back Oct, patron places a reserve, item is recalled from borrower and due date changed, now due back in 7 days, borrower notified by email)
Answer: Yes
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Emma

Subject: Lending Items over Vacation
Hi All
We are interested in understanding how libraries lend items over the vacation period. It would be great if you could answer a few questions, so we could get a picture of what is done across the sector.
1) Do you extend your loan periods for all patrons over the vacation period? (Example: 4 week loan item is checked out the last day of term in June and is due back in the first week of term in October)
2) Do you keep your loan periods the same over the vacation? (Example: 1 week loan due back in 1 week; 4 week loan due back in 4 weeks)
3) If you extend your loans over the vacation, do you allow these items to be reserved? (Example: Item due back Oct, patron places a reserve, due date remains the same)
4) If you extend your loans over the vacation, do you allow these items to be reserved and possibly "recalled"? (Example: Item due back Oct, patron places a reserve, item is recalled from borrower and due date changed, now due back in 7 days, borrower notified by email)
Please let me know by Friday 5 August, if you can. I am happy to answer any questions, if any of this needs further clarification.
With thanks,
Kathy
