RESEARCH BY DESIGNING PROGRAM
FOR ARCHITECTS, ARTISTS AND DESIGNERS
The ambition of Sint-Lucas and the RTS program is to actively take part
in creating a new, relevant foundation for research in architecture and
design, by developing research by designing.
Now, we are glad to offer the Research Training Sessions (RTS) program
to all
interested researchers and professionals in the fields of design:
academics, architects, visual artists and designers.
RTS is a 2-year scheme constructed to help designers and artists develop
research, which will be based on their own creative practice.
CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
RTS is a unique proposition in the context of the current design
research postgraduate courses which exist in Europe. It focuses on
defining and developing knowledge which emerges from exploration of the
space between art and science, practice and theory, the exploratory and
the explanatory.
TUTORS
The RTS tutors: an international group of experts in the fields of
design research, cybernetics, knowledge processes and communication
(from Belgium, the Netherlands, Turkey, UK, Germany, Australia, Poland,
USA, Sweden and Norway).
The tutors’ profiles are available on the RTS website:
http://rts.bydesigning.info.
CONCEPT OF THE PROGRAM
The first year is built around four general topics:
WHY/HOW DESIGN RESEARCH? / KNOWLEDGE / REFLECTION / ARTEFACT
The second year develops the issues introduced in the first year and
deepens the understanding, e.g.:
HOW DESIGN RESEARCH? / ACTION AND OBSERVATION / BY DESIGN FOR DESIGN /
RESEARCH PRACTICE
During the sessions, the fundamental issues of research by design are
discussed in a way in which each of the participants can think and
develop his/her own research ideas and research questions. All this may
eventually lead to the formal formulation of a PhD project. The program
can also be followed as research training in the context of a PhD
program.
Additionally to the sessions, the possibility to individually discuss
projects and concepts is available in a form of tutorials, focused
workshops or individual consultations. A specific digital communication
platform has been developed.
The program concludes with a research project prepared by each
participant, under the supervision of one of the RTS tutors. This
project will consist of a written part and a design work. All works will
be presented and discussed during the special and final session.
A more detailed description of these topics and more information about
the schedule can be found on the website: http://rts.bydesigning.info.
