Friends,
The heartfelt plea of our Greek colleague was perhaps distant from the purpose of the list -- or perhaps not. I did not think that he was asking for an answer -- merely voicing a wish that we recognize the fact that decent human beings find themselves caught in a difficult situation.
Is there a solution? Sophocles proposed one in Oedipus at Colonus:
"Not to be born is best."
Failing that, he offers a second proposal in the closing lines of Oedipus the King:
"Now as we keep our watch and wait the final day,
count no man happy til he dies, free of pain at last."
Two cents' worth, Sophocles's and mine. Unless, of course, Keith withdraws the penny from circulation.
