Let's look at this from another perspective.
Are people going for elective cosmetic surgery being penalised because they are electing/paying to have some kind of improvement? The breast augmentation, nose job, face lift, laser eye surgery etc. Is this a case of what Australians call the 'Tall Poppy Syndrome', cutting down people because they stand above the others - essentially putting them in their place.
A person taking maternity leave to start a family has that leave guaranteed by law. But isn't that also a lifestyle choice?
A person having time off work for the hip, knee replacement could just limp along taking medications rather than have the operation. It is a choice to have the pain and discomfort relieved by an operation
The sportsperson having time off for a sprained ankle becuase of a lifestyle chioce. If he/she wasn't running there would not have been the sprain.
All extreme examples, I know. But.......................
At the bottom line is the question of whether the person is fit and well enough to do their job.
What is the long term impact of supporting time off work for life style choices?
Will there be a mile long queue at the HR office of Screw-The-Poor Ltd. Asking for 'Cosmetic Leave'?

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] cosmetic surgery
The sometime difficult issues around time off for cosmetic surgery is causing some debate again and I, as my HR colleagues would be interested please in seeing other OHAs policies or protocols in how they address staff undergoing cosmetic surgery. I take the general viewpoint that any elective surgery for cosmetic reasons unless identified clearly as for psychological reasons should be ideally taken during a staff members leave time. Any unfortunate time off afterwards for complications such as infection etc, could be considered as sick time. Your views and comments, policies, protocols etc would be appreciated and helpful.
thank you
