I believe that in iconography she has at times been conflated/confused
with Mary Magdalene. Both are sometimes shown clothed, as in some of
John's sources, only in their long (usually wavy) hair. In the absence
of other clues it's often hard to tell which is meant. A 1510
sculpture identified as Mary Magdalen by Gregor Erhart is in the Louvre:

Looking REMARKABLY like Botticelli's Venus!! And no pot of ointment.
BTW, this is hardly mediaeval, but I am sure I once saw on (British) TV a
cartoon film about Mary of Egypt. It was remarkably well done. Very delicate
drawing and colouring. I remember Mary coloured terracotta with masses of
white curls. The lion was fun too. Does anyone know anything about it ?
