Subject: Re: Design Metaphors
Thanks for all the suggestions!
(I was really looking for the term "design metaphor" rather than metaphors
in general, but I now realize that it is not an established term.)
There appears to be several meanings attached to "design metaphors" as such
and to metaphors in design in general.
"Design metaphors" may mean metaphors for the design process (for instance
that design is "search", from Hey, J & Agogino, A (2007))
"Design metaphors" may also mean metaphors used in the design process for
different purposes, for instance (from Krippendorff (206)):
Generative - to allow for reframing and new ideas in the process (based on
Schön)
Communicative - to allow for understanding of the resulting artifact
Especially in the IS field the use of communicative metaphors is widespread
and explicit. ("Windows", "buttons", "web"-"pages" etc)
What I was thinking about could then be phrased as "concept metaphors",
which captures an idea on a conceptual level and allows stakeholders to
explorer the concept before details are laid out. (Such metaphor is then
both generative and communicative). Examples could be "internet bank",
"self-service government" or "electronic assistant". Such "concept
metaphors" have been playing a key role in many innovations. Perhaps mostly
in the fields of service and IS innovation which to large degree deal with
immaterial artifacts?
References to writings specifically on "conceptual metaphors" is most
welcome!
/Lars
