The Postgraduates who Teach Psychology Network (PGwT) have organised a teaching
workshop at Liverpool Hope University on 29th March 2010. There is NO COST for
attending this event and there are travel BURSARIES available.
Don't just sit there -- say something! Getting students to interact in class.
Chris Atherton, University of Central Lancashire.
Sometimes all the preparation in the world isn't enough if the students don't
want to engage. In this session, Dr Chris Atherton, University of Central
Lancashire, will review some ways of making sure that you aren't the only one
interacting during your teaching sessions, by encouraging you to consider the
types of question you ask, and when and how you ask them. The session will also
address different ways of structuring class time, with a view to breaking up the
traditional, stand-at-the-front-and-talk-for-an-hour approach in favour of more
student-led, interactive methods.
Enquiry Based Learning: what it is and what it can do for you
In this session, Professor Lin Norton, Liverpool Hope University, will present
some reasons why enquiry-based learning in Psychology is important by referring
to the concept of a ‘powerful learning environment’ in which learning is seen as
complex, contextual and collaborative and in which knowledge is seen as
constructed rather than transmitted (Dochy et al, 2005). By highlighting some
examples Lin will show how EBL can be used successfully in teaching situations
in which postgraduates often find themselves (where curriculum content and
assessment are often already determined). The session is planned to be
interactive, thought-provoking and fun!
Publish or Perish!
Getting your research published and read is key to succeeding in an academic
career. The most successful researchers plan their publishing strategy
alongside designing their research. In this session, Dr Sarah Peters,
University of Manchester, will take you through the process of getting
published – from deciding what and when to publish, identifying the right
journal for your work, through to tips for making writing easier and dealing
with difficult reviewers. The session is planned to be interactive and
participants will leave with a publishing plan that is tailored to their own
research programme.
Lunch and refreshments are included free of charge but advanced registration is
required. To register, please email Kath Armstrong at
