Hi All,
For any other new people to the list (Hannah wasn't aware), I thought I would resend the following email about requesting journal articles that was circulated in October last year:
##############
I have noticed a surge in requests for articles/chapters etc recently. Strictly speaking this is an activity that breaches copyright and could result in the (public) list being closed down. I completely empathise with those with limited access, it is understandably frustrating to be denied access to that essential article that happens to be in a journal that your institution doesn't subscribe to. However, this is what Inter Library Loans are for. Also, I have found that even if an article isn't available through my institution's library portal, I can still sometimes get it through a Google Scholar search (often the author will have a pdf on their site).
So I am going to have to be really strict (as I am sure none of us want this list to disappear!) and ask that there are no more article requests.
#############
There were also a couple of helpful suggestions from people on the list as how to obtain articles:
May I also add and I am sure Sue will kindly agree; that you can also directly e-mail the author and request that they e-mail it to you as a last resort! I have done this at times and the author does usually respond with the article attached! - Dally Virk.
Another option is to find a copy of the journal article and email the first or second author and ask them for a copy of their paper. I have done this many times and on 99% of occasions authors are happy that you are interested in their work and willing to supply a .pdf or paper copy of the article. In addition, trying members of your department and supervisors might be worth a try too - some academics will have their own subscriptions to journals. - Anna Winterbottom.
