[I'm writing this post with my MCG Committee member hat on. If you have any
comments or thoughts on additional posting guidelines, we'd love to hear
them. This list has over 600 subscribers and we want to ensure that
membership is a positive experience for each of them.]
I thought it would be timely to remind everyone of the Acceptable Use Policy
that applies to the MCG email discussion list as part of the JISCMail
service so I've copied a summary and link below.
The MCG list specifically is for discussion "between museum, gallery and
higher education professionals about the various uses of computing in museum
contexts" and posts should relate to both computing and cultural heritage in
some way. As we are a UK-based group (albeit with an international
membership), a consideration of the relevance of a post to our UK membership
is important.
The JISCMail policy isn't immediately apparent when you sign up for the list
and it's not easy to find on the JISCMail site, but someone was kind enough
to dig it up for me. In summary, the terms are:
*
* [image: Image: bullet] JISCMail is a service which runs mailing lists for
the benefit of the UK Higher and Further Education and Research
Community [image:
Image: bullet] Each JISCMail list must have at least one list owner [image:
Image: bullet] JISCMail does not allow spam, junk mail, chain letters or
other unsolicited bulk email, commercial or otherwise, on any list [image:
Image: bullet] The posting of unsolicited commercial or advertising material
is not allowed [image: Image: bullet] Messages sent to JISCMail lists
should be courteous and appropriate, and should not disrupt the flow of
discussion on a list [image: Image: bullet] Copyright of messages sent to a
JISCMail list are retained by the original sender [image: Image:
bullet] Messages
sent to a JISCMail list will normally be archived on the list's
homepage [image:
Image: bullet] Due to the nature of the internet, the security of messages
sent to JISCMail cannot be guaranteed [image: Image: bullet] The Science
and Technology Facilities Council <http://www.stfc.ac.uk/> provides the
JISCMail service under contract to the JISC and is registered for compliance
under the Data Protection Act 1998 [image: Image: bullet] You will not
attempt to mislead others as to your identity, either by providing false
information when subscribing to, or posting to a JISCMail list, or by
forging the headers and addresses in an email message [image: Image:
bullet] Membership of a JISCMail list must be voluntary, and neither the
list owner nor any other person may subscribe a person to a list without
that person's consent [image: Image: bullet] We reserve the right to remove
offensive messages from our archives immediately

available at http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/help/policy/.
cheers, Mia (in MCG Committee member capacity)
