I suspect that lack of availability has lead to low use stats and thus
cancellation for some titles but it is hard to prove. I have some
publishers which randomly turn off access and make it hard to get it back on
- certainly that makes me want to cancel them and given the chance - I will
more actively promote titles from their lists as suggestions.
When Informaworld segregated one subscribed title to Informa Pharmaceutical
Sciences - was slow in activating it - and turned it off twice after
activated- I was really happy to cancel since its use was low.
I have also promoted cancellation of print titles for vendors with licenses
that were not acceptable, no archival rights (we prefer Portico) or who
charged such a premium for online that we had to retain print. For us -
this includes most titles which are hosted by Ovid - e.g. LWW titles. Their
pricing model does not work for us. I expect that over the long run - these
will eventually go away due to low use in print even though they have good
content. We are finding that in many disciplines we cannot get users to go
to the print under any circumstances. Combined with the traditional
undercount of print format use, most of these titles find it hard to perform
in a cost effective way.
