medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hello Anne.
It is possible for a number of people to get direct access to ODNB as you
say. Most UK universities allow their members access through the Athens
system, for example. However, quite a few independent scholars are not able
to obtain easy direct access to the entire Dictionary.
What anyone can do is subscribe to the ODNB 'Life of the Day' or access the
Lives of the Week free through www.oxforddnb.com.
I subscribe to the Life of the Day and have, for some time now (having first
asked George the Great whether he thought it would be useful), been pointing
out to members of this list when that Life is of relevance to the interests
of the list and providing the day's link. The present flurry of offers to
pass on these biographies arises from some housekeeping I am doing with my
email inbox. As I am coming across biographies that might be of interest, I
am sending out the notes that you have noticed but not the links, which no
longer work. I do not send out the whole biography because that would
clutter up the list more than the list owners and users would like. Once I
have caught up with my backlog, I do not expect to do anything more than
draw people's attention to the day's life.
So far, each note has resulted in several requests for the relevant
biography. However, if the consensus of the list is that you would prefer
not to receive such notices, I will be happy to desist and return to reading
them on my own.
Regards,
Rosemary Hayes
