Terence: Numerous practice related issues, some quite controversial and some
seldom discussed here arise embedded in your questions that unfortunately I
do not have time to wade into today. To be frank some in practice might
observe a degree of political naivety in your very practical question.
In general I think you will find in the real world that the UX profession is
under siege and working hard to become more relevant and more useful to
organizations in a rapidly changing world.
Due to the offshoring of UX the UX practitioners have little choice but to
change. Needless to say one can see that migration underway all around in
the marketplace if you know what it is you are looking at.
Traditionally like many forms of design, UX tends to grapple with extremely
framed challenges and struggles with less framed fuzzy issues found in the
real world of organizations and societies today.
The traditional "Interaction" press has done an incredibly poor job of
covering this story so don't look for the real present or future there.
We continue to work with numerous internal UX groups working hard to
undertake initiatives that signal more useful strategic contributions to
their organizations. In a downsized globalization impacted economy all are
trying hard to be relevant and add what is now valued. One can see the UX
consultancies and various known UX experts, some on this list, in the same
migration.
Although seldom talked about on this list no one should underestimate the
forces of globalization on the changing nature of design, who gets to do
what, where the fees are, where the fees are not, etc. These are the real
dynamics of the marketplace that will effect present and future generations
of design professionals for many years to come. Educators ignore those
dynamics at the peril of their studentıs futures.
Sorry that I do not today have more time for this (I have probably already
ignited a stick of dynamite) but you might find this AskNextD conversation
