He was excommunicated for bigamy and adultery. He repudiated his
first wife, Bertha, and married as his second wife Bertrade de
Montfort, who was already the wife of the Count of Anjou. The
excommunication was lifted several times, as he kept promising to
return Bertrade to her husband, but he kept breaking the agreement, so
it was reimposed. Eventually, I think the Church just gave up and
accepted the relationship, but I'm less clear on that.
