medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I´ve lost track of who was writing what, but am really curious about the
following.
For what was King Phillip excommunicated,
Wasn't it for bigamy with the Count of Anjou's third or fourth wife ??
(Bertrade de Montfort - who ended up as the Abbess of a nunnery she had
founded herself after having served her apprenticeship at Fontevraud. I
wonder no one has written a bodice ripper about THIS lady - or have I just
missed it ?)
Neither side bothered with a divorce / annulment or dispensation before
going ahead with a nuptial mass AND since the C of A had a bit of a serial
appetite, some of us think it served HIM right!
and how did he become reconciled to the Church?
By dumping Bertrade and going back to his lawful queen. But they had at
least two children - IIRC the boy was called "Floris" - and this threw a
spanner in the succession works for a bit.
BMC
"Ivo had excommunicated Philip I (twice?), and the King (then Louis VI)
certainly had an interest in who succeeded him."
