medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I am forwarding the following request on behalf of a fellow medievalist who is not a member of this discussion list (but probably should be). Please respond directly to her if possible.
Thanks--

Dear Colleagues,
I’m trying to compile information on medieval relic-lists and inventories from continental Europe, whether published or unpublished. As far as I know, there has never been any attempt to create a handlist of them except for England, so instead I am turning to all medievalists for help.
Prior to c1200, a list of relics may survive in a book used in the liturgy (such as a gospel book, sacramentary, or confraternity book) as part of a treasure inventory; embedded in a chronicle or even a charter; in the margins of a biblical commentary; as an inscription on an altar or a reliquary; as part of a foundation notice, and doubtless in a range of other places I haven’t yet identified. From the 12th century on, they also occur in archives, as administrative documents.
I would be very grateful if you could send details of any relic-lists and inventories known to you (especially ones prior to 1204) to me at <[log in to unmask]> . When I have collated the information you supply into a handlist, I’ll make it available for everyone’s use. Thank you very much for your help!
Julia Smith
