Dear Tom,
I regret if somebody has found my message offending to you in person.
It was not intended for you, but the persistent demand to get everything in English
(and by preference printed after 1998!) is slowly getting me on my nerves.
Scholars in Europe from my generation did study at many of the major Universities
in France, Germany, Italy and Britain, and had to adapt to the multilingual conditions.
My first 12 years in school was in the Danish language.
If some are unable to read any of the major scholarly publications in other languages
than their own, is it difficult for me to see how they can claim to make "Research".
Everything that you do personally on the List seems to agree with this assumption.
As I did tell you almost ten years ago is your "Recent Titles" postings very useful.
The passage "not just from Germany but from all over Europe" has especially
caught my attention.
May I ask: was there any other "Western Civilization" in the World in 1470-1490?
I'm sorry, but that kind of ahistorical ignorance is pulling a tricker in my
temperament, and can turn into aggression. What are we doing with our lives?
I would welcome a general discussion of the purpose of humanistic research, and
in this context especially the history of medieval Europe. What is History?
As a very green young student did I read a paperback called "What is History"
(Pelican Books 1964) - and it was fascinating reading because the author gradually
reasoned himself out of logical credibility. All his arguments against other historians
did guide me to the very authors worth serious attention, namely those he was against.
Best wishes
Erik Drigsdahl
