Just to announce that there will be an exhibit of the work of filmmaker
/ performance / visual artist Stuart Sherman at the 80WSE Gallery at
NYU, located at 80 Washington Square East. The exhibit runs between
October 21 and December 19 and there will be a preview on 20th between 5
to 8 and then an opening reception on the 27th the same hours. The
gallery is open Monday through Saturday between 10 to 6.
The exhibit will include documentation and videos of Stuart's object
spectacles, theater works, films, sculptural projects, collages, poetry,
and, shown the first time, will be a a group of the extraordinary
drawings that he did in the early 1970s, a few years before he started
the object performances for which he is best known. For those who don't
know Sherman's films and performances, they for the most part consist of
carefully worked out structures involving object and film manipulations.
Witty but as part of the exhibit tries show, also motivated by
philosophical concerns and anxieties.
In addition, Berenice Reynaud is organizing a show of Stuart's films,
using 16mm projection where prints are available (MOMA is restoring the
films) and videos that will take place on November 11 at the Einstein
Auditorium, 34 Stuyvesant Street, Manhattan. On December 4 -7 at the
Emily Harvey Gallery, 537 Broadway, 2nd Floor there will be a
performances of some of Sherman's theatrical works. Time not yet set. A
catalog will come out in December and there will be a panel discussion
at that time.
(for full disclosure I was a co-curator of the show)
