Dear Nick,
I am sorry that I could not reply earlier, but there were so many
urgent things after my return from Poland that I have not found the
time to concentrate on your detailed questions. However, I finally
succeeded to get rid of those things and here we go.
• Bleicherstr.
Like you I wondered about the little holes at the bottom. Your
assumption that the post may have stood upside down once with a cap
nailed on its top seems reasonable especially if you take Kohl (1871,
4) into account, who tells that whale bone posts in Bremen frequently
had an iron cap nailed on top. In contrast to the holes the mark on
the left upper angle seems comparably fresh to me judged by the
picture. It looks like the traces we get on the archaeological
excavations when the dredge touches an object with its shovel.
Concerning the provenance: I know the proximity of the Bleicherstraße
to the Wallanlagen is tempting. I compared the bone also with the
picture by Erna Mohr, but although they look similar I am not
convinced. First of all jaw sections do look similar in general.
Secondly as far as I can see none of the Wallanlagen posts has a cap.
And finally if Thomas Kuppel remembers it being from Lesum or Bremen-
Nord it is probably from somewhere else.
I have an appointment with Thomas Kuppel on Monday morning. I will
measure the bone and I will try to find answers about the exact
provenance and the visible modifications. When I talked to him on the
phone he said that he has no contact to the former friend from whom
he got the bone anymore but he will try to reach him and ask.

matters once and for all.

Thanks for the pictures and articles on the re-erected arch there. Is
the pretty woman in front of the picture your girl friend?
I will have to stop now. I go back to your Niederbüren and Dunge
mails on Monday.
Best
Christian
I will go or an excavation in Marocco on the 15th of October and will
