medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Born in Flanders (1548), moved to Holland (1583), wrote his Schildersboeck (1604) in Dutch, not Flemish, and died in Amsterdam in 1606. So he was an inhabitant of the Low Countries and the Republic of the Seven United Provinces (since 1581) and not a Fleming anymore when he wrote the book. Flanders was still part of the Habsburg Empire then.
