Call for Papers: Social Justice Films after 9/11
Editors: Brian Bergen-Aurand and Anne Bergen-Aurand
Deadline for Submission: 10 April 2010
We seek essays, case studies, interviews, and translations reflecting on or responding to Social Justice issues, crises, and movements after the events of 11 September 2001. How were the events recorded and represented? What issues lie at the center of the events of that day and the responses that followed? How were these responses recorded, represented, and deployed? Who were the people and institutions most affected by the events and why? How did filmmakers respond to the events and the people most affected? How successful or unsuccessful has film been as a medium for responding to 9/11 and the Social Justice issues that arose in the shadow of that event? Essays may consider these questions and more.
Submisions might focus on, but are not limited to:
Individual films and filmmakers
Clusters of films and filmmakers around issues, across locations, or within genres
The rise of compilation and anthology films
The use and abuse of 9/11 sound and imagery
The deployment of the term “terrorism” in and around post-9/11 films
Imag(in)ing the whole/fractured body over the last ten years
Marketing and promotional strategies
“Happenings” and film protests
Post-9/11 film on the Internet
Museums, Rooftops, Classrooms, and other alternative exhibition sites
Local reception of global projections
Community responses to images of 9/11, war, and protest
Rejecting/Accepting images of others
The role(s) of conservative, liberal, progressive, and radical punditry
