Dear ferret lovers,
our colleague Christian Küchelmann is at present also investigating a context with ferret/polecat remains. His address is [log in to unmask] I told him that some twenty years ago Arturo Morales was investigating the discrimination between domestic and wild form of this carnivore. His address is: [log in to unmask] I have no idea whether he has ever published the results of his research.
yours sincerely,
Anton

Hi Carol,
It would be interesting to know how you identified it as a a ferret as opposed to the wild form, the polecat.
In the paper that Aleks mentioned the skull was interpreted as a ferret because its canines had been filed, do you have something similar or was your identification based on morphometric characters?
At this sites Simon Davis and I identified some bones of Mustela putorius size but we were unable to say whether they belonged to polecats or ferrets:
Albarella U & Davis S. 1994 . The Saxon and Medieval animal bones excavated
1985-1989 from West Cotton, Northamptonshire . AML report 17/94.
Cheers,
Umberto
