MLA London is offering London librarians a chance to attend a one day
training course on delivering information literacy skills to business.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to deliver a
two-hour training session to business people. This session will help
business people to understand the principles of good information use,
and will show them how the library can meet their information needs.
Delivering the training will help libraries to build relationships with
their business users.
The course is taking place on 2 or 5 November and is free of charge.
However, places are limited so early booking is advisable.
Further information follows. If you have any questions or would like to
book a place, please contact Ellen Collins on

Please feel free to pass this invitation on to colleagues.
Information Literacy Training Programme
MLA London invites you to attend a one day course on delivering
information literacy skills to businesses, helping them to become more
effective seekers and users of information.
Background
Business people are increasingly responsible for handling their own
information and they tend to turn to the internet as their main
resource. In many cases, this is fine but when it comes to more complex
information needs, it can be hard to sort the meaningful results from
the irrelevant. Many business people feel uncomfortable relying on the
internet as their main research tool but they don't necessarily know how
to use libraries and librarians to good effect.
The course
This course will equip you with the skills to train business people in
how to use a wider range of information resources effectively, and
encourage them to use libraries as work spaces.
The course will cover:
* techniques on how to deliver training effectively, how to engage
people in a learning situation and create energy amongst the audience
* how to use search engines to better effect and how to review the
quality of the information
* 4 case studies to provide different scenarios of the type of
information problems and enquiries that business people might have and
the possible solutions
* building a template to help you develop a 'best practice'
approach to any enquiry you may receive
* how to manage search results, organise and share information
Outcomes for you
After this fun and practical one-day course, you will be able to deliver
a focused 2 hour training session to business people, using scenarios
and case studies which you have helped to shape and enthusing the
participants to search and use information and libraries in a more
effective way. The course will help you to ask the right questions when
approached with a business problem and work with business people to
elicit exactly what they need.
You will receive a detailed workbook to take away with you and a
template for how to approach any business enquiry. This will help you to
train other colleagues on an ongoing basis.
Outcomes for businesses
Your training will equip the business participants to be more aware of
the different types of resources available in libraries, both free and
paid for. They will understand how and when to use the librarian's
research skills and be more aware that the library can be a valuable
place to work.
The participants will take away a leaflet containing a list of typical
questions to ask themselves before they start any research or place a
business enquiry, a list of key resources and contacts and some top tips
about how to carry out research effectively.
