dear Max
many thanks, and please pass on to your friend my gratitude.
Meanwhile, my email has struck nerves all over the place, with a wide
range of quick responses--many thanks for yours--what's emerging is a
large number of categories of destruction, from printers dumping dud
sheets of books to institutions dumping donated personal libraries
to publishers pulping unsold books for tax purposes to personal
anxiety about whether to throw this particular volume out, and so on.
The range too of apparent feelings about throwing out the books range
from professional concern to a visceral distaste. So, thank you for
spending a bit of time on this for me, I am very grateful. I have
printed out all the replies, and the results will, tho I'm not yet
sure how, be written in to the essay, a copy of which I will send you
when it's done, with my compliments. The essay is one of a number of
essays, seven altogether, about the book and the language we use
about it. They are --
Meditatio : the printer printed : manifesto, Cuneiform Press, New York 2004
Zephyros : the book untitled, Electio Editions, Melbourne 2007
Each new book, The Codex Foundation, Berkeley 2008
What book does my library make, (given as a talk at Granary Books,
New York, February 2009, as part of their Threads series of talks on
the book, and to appear as a chapbook in October with Mimeo Mimeo
magazine)
The limits of the book as object (given as a paper at the BSANZ
conference, July 2009)
Destroying the books (in progress)
The books to come (in progress)
Together , the essays add up to an investigation in which even the
terms of my sentences undergo change with discoveries on the way. I
may retrospectively edit those changes into a more homogenous text,
or I may not, I don't know at this stage. I'm hoping that I can
gather the essays together into a single volume next year.
Meanwhile, all best, and thanks again for being so generous in your
response to my enquiry
