Widower's last pilgrimage
He’s telling me it’s twelve months since we lost her -
with her in mind there are things he's doing now.
Seed potatoes just in the ground he'll harvest,
if no frost burns them, for Christmas dinner.
And Taranaki's rhododendron gardens
she loved to visit, he’ll go see, alone.
Last trip he wants to make - Paraparaumu,
he hears they’ve put a second storey up -
a long way to go but so worth seeing –
the country's best - the Southward car museum.
Remember their little Morris, first car they had?
He'll find one there, perfectly restored,
as if their fifty years could be relived
or the first few Minor outings of their love.
