Hello everyone,
Since 2003 I have been developing design methods that use 'critical
artefacts' (provocative conceptual designs) to foster innovation; the
methodology I developed to support such methods being the subject of my Phd
awarded in March this year.
(You might be aware of this research from Chris Rust's discussions on this
list and his own 'blog:
http://chrisrust.wordpress.com/2009/03/02/an-argumentative-process/ – thanks
Chris!)
The 'critical artefact methods' resulting from this work have been and
continue to be used in design projects based at Sheffield Hallam University,
but we are also keen to explore how other designers might utilise similar
techniques in their own practice. To this end, I'm running a one-day
workshop on critical artefact methods at the Nordic Design Research
conference in Oslo on 30th August. The workshop will include practical
exercises applying critical artefact methods in 'mini' design projects
alongside a discussion of their underlying methodology. Through this, we
also hope to stimulate debate about the role of critical artefacts (as the
products of critical design and related practices) within human-centred and
participatory design processes.
More details on the workshop are available here:

And my research here:

Participation is open to all conference attendees (at an additional small
fee), with registration being via the conference website ('earlybird'
discounts until 1st August):

After which, please contact me directly to sign up for the workshop.
I hope to meet some of you in Oslo!
Best regards,
Simon
