At some time during the night, someone managed to dislodge the waste line from the full blood count analyser in A/E. Instead of ringing the lab to ask what they should do (does anybody ever own up?)they looked round for a handy hole to insert the line.
Having found a suitable unoccupied spot they shoved it in and went away happy.
Unfortunately, this was the breather hole for the reagent bottle. The reagent was now becoming increasingly contaminated with blood. This was finally spotted when the BMS arrived next morning to carry out daily maintenance. Two patients were admitted on the basis of very spurious haematology results (no, they did not check them with a second sample to the lab.)
I am now going away to find a very large G&T......
