My goodness has this woman lost the plot completely?
Perhaps all the staff should have electric cattle prods and the customers should prostrate themselves when they enter and have gold plated membership cards to show how lucky they are......come to think of it *I'd* like a gold plated membership card.
And what is wrong with English people and children exactly?
best wishes

And what about making sure children's hands were clean and any
infectious diseases of borrowers had to be notified to staff .. And the
racing pages in newspapers being inked out with a big black roller to
discourage gambling ..not the Financial Times though..Ah yes ..the good
old days
How is sunny Brighton today?

Actually I don't think Beryl Bainbridge went far enough. I think things
have gone down hill since chained access was done away with...

Libraries
What was Beryl Bainbridge on this morning?
"Libraries these days are so absolutely awful; no wonder nobody wants to
go back"
"They've become like sort of happy clubs you can go to, I mean old
people
can go there to keep warm and read newspapers... and children... "
"they used to be kind of religious... you felt privileged... you had
huge great shelves of wonderful old-looking books - now it's just paper
and broad sunlight"
"reading has got to be much more awkward than that"
"sense of seriousness, a sense that this is really a place to go to, and
that the people who go there are really rather important..."
...or have I had an irony bypass?
