medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Herwig Weigl <[log in to unmask]>
>Medieval Latin allows imperpetuum for in perpetuum, and you can find it in
original charters.
a search on "imperpet*" in the digital PL turns up 28 hits, from charters of
Dagobert I and Louis II to Sigebertus Gemblacensis and Lucius II (1144).
but, it does not show up in Niemeyer.
only 8 hits in the AASS, however.
Herwig, why can't we assume that --originally at least-- the single word is,
indeed, an error for "i perpet*", the scribe more or less automatically
expanding the "i" into "im"?
