I agree, just to add 2 commnets on PhD supervision:

 

1) In my opinion, It is not so important the amount of supervision hours but the QUALITY of those hours. I dont think there is a straight relationship between amount of hours and quality of supervision

 

2) The allocation of amount of hours does not have to be distributed in a uniform manner during the whole PhD. As David mentioned, and I agree, at some stages of the PhD supervision the amount of hours will have to increase/decrease depending on many factors, such as, student progress, way of working, etc. and the supervisor should know when input is required. it seems simple, yet it is very difficult and requires a lot of different skills from a good supervisor.
