Many thanks to Ross Parry and members of the Bath Cultural Heritage
Service department for organising such a useful MCG Spring meeting.
I spoke at the meeting on "Engaging With The Social Web: A Risks and
Opportunities Framework". As I know not everybody on this list could
attend the meeting :-) I took a video of my talk, which is embedded
in a blog post on UKOLN's Cultural Heritage blog at
http://blogs.ukoln.ac.uk/cultural-heritage/2009/05/20/talk-at-the-mcg-spring-meeting-2009/
As I said during the talk, shouldn't be be making greater use of video
and audio recordings at events such as those organised by MCG? Note that
I'm not talking about hiring professional teams but making use of digital
cameras and devices such as Flip camera which are becoming much more
widely used?
I have also published a blog post on "Explaining the Risks and
Opportunities Framework" which is available at:
http://blogs.ukoln.ac.uk/cultural-heritage/2009/05/21/explaining-the-risks-and-opportunities-framework/
which describes how we need to take risks in order to exploit the
opportunities provided by innovations such as the Social Web and
describes a framework for managing the risks, based on documenting
purposes, benefits, risks, costs and missed opportunities. The framework
is supported by feedback from the wider community through, for example
"Critical Friends" (confidential, unbiassed feedback or friendly critics.
The policies and decision-making should seek to be made available in an
open fashion - and we need to avoid the major failures such as the UK
eUniversity.
Museums should welcome the opporrunity to be open, as this will reflect
the trust which museums have with the public. Ad as we have learnt from
the MPs expenses claims, the problems tend to come from a culture
of secrecy.
Comments welcome
Thanks
Brian
