Hi Gail,
Thank you very much for sharing with us what has happened and is happening with "Every Object..."
Security is always a major issue when opening a site up to contributions from the public. And when staff are no longer working actively on creating a web site, hacking etc can go unnoticed until it's too late.
I was very interested to read that you are putting "Every Object" into a Drupal system. I'm delighted to hear that it will be re-born - and look forward to the relaunch! Good luck with that project!!
It's difficult to get the balance right between outsourcing and building up expertise inside an organisation. I think that it should be possible to set up affordable systems that enable small museums to add new content to their own site quite easily after the Web CMS has been set up for them.
It's still such early days for IT, and we've come such a long way even in the last 10 years. Things move fast and there's constant pressure to hit the next new target; but we should pause for a moment to consider what we've learned, share those experiences nationally, and save time & money in the future.
