PhD Studentships in Statistics, Lancaster University
-----------------------------------------------------------
Applications are invited for PhD studentships in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University (UK).
We currently have several fully funded PhD studentships available in Statistics for UK and EU citizens to start in or after October 2009. These studentships are available for a range of projects which cover the various research interests within the department. Several also involve collaboration with external partners (e.g. industry, government agencies, research institutes).
Whilst funding details vary from project to project, typically a fully funded studentship pays fees plus a stipend for the length of the PhD. Minimum stipend values are approx. £13,000 per annum (tax free) with some studentships having enhanced stipends of up to £3,000 above this minimum amount.
The department provides a thriving research environment, with over 25 PhD students within statistics. It runs an extensive range of postgraduate level courses, as well as being a founder member of the UK's Academy for PhD Training in Statistics (APTS). The department provides generously for PhD students, for example in terms of travel money for conferences, office space and through providing all PhD students with a departmental laptop for use during their PhD. As one of the UK's most successful statistics groups, the department contains a broad range of interests including Applied Probability, Bayesian and Computational Statistics, Time Series and Extremes, Social Statistics, Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics.
We normally require the equivalent of a 1st class degree in Mathematics at undergraduate level, whilst an MSc in statistics is desirable.
Above all, if you've
* Enthusiasm to find out more about statistics;
* Good technical skills in mathematics, statistics and computing;
* Drive and persistence to get an answer to a problem;
then please get in touch!
