HEALTH & SAFETY EXECUTIVE

Statisticians

Band 3 and Band 4 positions available

Analytical Services Division, Health & Safety Executive

Attractive salary plus excellent benefits package including civil service pension

Liverpool

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is looking for five statisticians to join the Analytical Services Division.

As an HSE Statistician you will provide statistical and epidemiological intelligence on ill health and injuries in the workplace. You will be involved in a wide variety of strategic work programmes such as the analysis and interpretation of data from statistical and administrative sources (such as the Labour Force Survey); or the analysis and interpretation of data from epidemiological research to identify hazards and characterise risks.

You will regularly be called on to develop, interpret and communicate evidence that will influence policy and HSE operational activities. You will be asked to monitor and evaluate the outcome of that activity and provide analytical support to senior statisticians. You will also support internal and external customers by contributing to statistical data and interpretation in publications, web pages and other media sources.

The Chief Scientific Adviser's Group (CSAG) has a central role in ensuring HSE's policies and programmes of work are based on, amongst other things, sound statistical evidence. The group brings together HSE's experts on statistics, economics and social research. HSE Statistics Branch is part of Analytical Services Division within CSAG.

Analysis and interpretation of data and research is at the core of this job, always ensuring that you meet your customer's expectations. You need to have experience in the provision of data and research; in interpretation of that data and awareness of its context. You have programme and project management experience, are able to plan, organise and prioritise work effectively and can build good working relationships across multi-disciplinary boundaries. You have excellent oral and written communication skills and are confident presenting your work clearly, openly and consistently to bigger groups and wide ranges of people.

Enthusiastic and confident, you will have sound analytical abilities and the potential to develop these abilities in a variety of areas. You will ideally have an Honours Degree (or equivalent) or postgraduate training with substantial numerate/statistical content. Alternatively you may have another relevant social research or statistical qualification at the appropriate level, or equivalent relevant experience of statistical work.

This post is offered at Band 3 or 4. For the Band 3 post, liaison with customers is an important part of the role and we will expect strong skills in this area; you will also take on greater responsibility and have experience in analysing and interpreting statistics. For both Bands, sound working knowledge of relevant specialist statistics packages such as SPSS and Stata would be advantageous.

A professional body with considerable worldwide standing, the mission of the HSE is to protect people and reduce risks in the workplace; HSE is also responsible for health and safety regulation in the UK, working with local authorities to ensure compliance and enforcement on a day to day basis.

As the leading authority on health and well-being in the workplace, HSE is committed to best practice as an employer; a first class benefits package, generous leave allowances, opportunities for professional development and an excellent working environment are waiting for the successful applicants.
