medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
A bit off-topic here perhaps: I'm looking for someone literate in
Arabic who would be willing to help me read and write some simple
words. Not only do I not speak the language, I still have difficulty
even reading the lettering.
First, I've encountered some Islamic textiles with bands of very
stylized Arabic lettering, and I'm in need of someone who can tell me
whether they form recognizable words, and if so, what they say. (Both
real calligraphy and pseudo-calligraphy are fairly common on the
textiles I'm looking at, so some of them could be nonsense.)
Second, a bonus would be if someone could help me puzzle out how to
turn some basic Arabic words into stylized (but identifiable)
lettering in the same style as what's already on the textiles.
My usual networks have all come up empty on this one -- either no one
knows who to ask, or no one has contact information ;) So if anyone
has colleagues or other contacts who might be willing to help me
flounder through this project, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks!
