The Department of History and Philosophy at the University of the West
Indies (UWI), Cave Hill, and The Barbados Museum and Historical Society
(BMHS) have launched their 10-part lecture series “Slavery in Barbados”.
The second lecture will be delivered by UWI doctoral candidate and acting
director of the Commission for Pan-African Affairs Deryck Murray, on the
“Origins of the Enslaved” on February 17, 2009 at 8 p.m. at ‘Solidarity
House’, the Barbados Workers Union headquarters in Harmony Hall, St Michael.
The series started with a lecture by Principal of the Cave Hill Campus and
UWI Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, addressing the topic
:‘Why Slavery in Barbados?’ and continues until April 14. All lectures will
be held at Solidarity House at 8pm. Speakers are past and present UWI
academics, as well as representatives from the Barbados Museum. Anyone
unable to make it to Solidarity House can listen live to the lectures

These public lectures are a continuation of an annual programme of public
education that the BMHS and the University have co-sponsored since 2003.
The next lecture will be delivered on February 24 on the topic “ ‘For The
Better Ordering and Governing Of Negroes’: The Barbados Slave Laws” by
history professor emeritus Prof. Woodville Marshall. On March 3, Dr. Nancy
Jacobs and Ms. Alissandra Cummins will speak on the topic “How the Enslaved
Were Perceived: Images of Slavery”. The following week, Dr. Karl Watson
will address “The Enslaved in the Rural Areas”. The next week, Dr. Pedro
Welch will speak on “The Enslaved in Town”. Following him, Dr. Tara Inniss
will address the topic “How The Enslaved Lived: Gender and Family Issues”
on March 24. On March 31, Dr. Marcia Burrowes will address “How The
Enslaved Lived: Independent Social and Cultural Activity”. The next week,
Dr. Thomas Loftfield will speak on “Slavery From The Ground Up: The
Archaeological Evidence”. The following week, Professor Alvin Thompson will
deliver the final lecture on April 14 on the topic “ ‘Testing The Chains’:
Resistance to Slavery”.
