Last night our old friends the Stanyons put on their annual carols evening at
their house for family and friends.
When we got there we found our voices rusty, but it was touching to join in
(from photocopied sheets) this,
The Coventry Carol...
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,
bye, bye, lully lullay.
O sisters too, how may we do,
for to preserve this day,
this poor youngling for whom we sing,
bye, bye lully lullay.
Herod the king in his raging,
charged he hath this day,
his men of night, in his own sight,
all young children to slay.
Then woe is me, poor child, for thee!
And every morn and day,
for thy parting not say nor sing
bye, bye, lully lullay.
Lully, lullay, thou little tiny child,
bye, bye, lully lullay.
which now googled, first comes up a version with melody instantly booming out on
what sounds like a hurdygurdy
http://www.oremus.org/hymnal/l/l551.html
AND we sang
Adam lay ibounden,
Bounden in a bond;
Four thousand winter
Thoght he not too long;
And all was for an appil,
An appil that he tok,
And clerkes finden,
Wreten in here book (here, their)
Ne hadde the appil taken ben,
The appil taken ben,
Ne hadde never our lady
A ben hevene quene.
Blessed be the time
That appil take was.
Therefore we moun singen (moun, may)
'Deo gracias.'
I find on youtube a version by
