Dear List members,
David's question reminds me of another issue surrounding Haemolysis; how
do list members interpret H, I and L indices in relation to various
analytes measured on their automated analysers?
For instance we operate the following 3 tier rule for Potassium:
If K < 3.5 (lower limit of our reference interval) regardless of the H
index then report the K result with a suitable comment
Rationale: The K result is likely to be much lower than the stated
result and the requester should take appropriate action
If K > 3.5 and H index is >0.35 but less than 1.5 then report the K
result with a comment "Haemolysed sample"
If K > 3.5 and H index is >1.5 then suppress the K result with a comment
"Haemolysed sample"
I wonder what other labs do in with their indices? Do you suppress or
send out the results with a suitable comment?
Nb we use the Abbott ci8200 to perform our chemistry assays, where the H
index correlates well with Haemoglobin in g/L

What do list members think of a new national performance target - reduce
the
number of hemolysed samples submitted for biochemistry. What a waste of
blood, time and money.
