Hi John:
See my review of Noel Carroll's new book in the Film-Philosophy journal edition posted now for a gloss on mirror neurons, with reference to the book Gut Reactions...see also Margarete Bruun Vaage's article on the Empathetic Film Spectator in Volume 10 of Film and Philosophy.
Hope this helps...I think the discovery of the existence of mirror neurons is the best evidence for empathy theory in cognitive psychology

Speaking of horror, and filmic emotions in general, does anyone know of
any writing that applies mirror neurons to audience response. Last time
I taught the course I threw them out as a possible support to my
critique of Carroll's propositionalism (mainly relied on something like
Prinz' account of emotions that just came out) and I'd like to see if
this could be pushed further next semester.
