Following Peter Gosling as Healthcare Scientist of the Year (2005),
Kevin Spencer as Healthcare Scientist of the Year (2006)
and Roger Ekins' Lifetime Achievement Award (2006),
the CSO Conference in London on 25th November held more prizes for
biochemists.
Mike Hallworth (Shrewsbury) received the Healthcare Scientist of the Year
Award for 2008 from NHS Medical Director, Professor Sir Bruce Keogh.
The citation referred to Mike's work on the "Speaking Out for Clinical
Science" taskforce in the 1990s, focussed mainly on the online laboratory
test encyclopaedia LTO UK (www.labtestsonlineuk.org.uk) but also mentioned
the work in merging the two European bodies responsible for Clinical
Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EC4 and FESCC) to form EFCC - the
European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (Mike
being the inaugural President of EFCC for 2008-09 (June - June).
He is also Chair of the Annual Meeting Organizing Committee for American
Association for Clinical Chemistry's (AACC's) 2010 Annual Meeting in
Anaheim, the first European ever to chair an AACC AMOC.
Furthermore Kath Brownbill (Blackburn) and Sam Ekin also received the
Service Innovation and Improvement Award for the High Street Testing
project - a good night all round for clinical biochemistry!
Many congratulations to all of them on these well deserved accolades.
