medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Stan Metheny <[log in to unmask]>
> I can't put my hands on anything definitive just now, but IIRC the papal
umbraculum [aka ombrellino, conopeum] and tintinabulum came into use in the
Renaissance.
yes, but did some Renaissance Papa just suck those out of his own fingers?
more likely (isn't it?) those liturgical appliances were in use before these
"Born Again" guys "discovered" them.
like, say, the flabellum
http://www.metmuseum.org/works_of_art/collection_database/the_cloisters/liturgical_fan_flabellum/objectview.aspx?page=1&sort=0&sortdir=asc&keyword=&fp=1&dd1=7&dd2=0&vw=1&collID=7&OID=70011794&vT=1
cf. the wonderful article FLABELLUM in F. Cabrol and H. Leclercq, Dictionnaire
d Archéologie Chrétienne et de Liturgie, t. V, París, 1925, cols.
1610-1625.
>I suspect Noonan's _Church Visible_ would tell the tale, but my copy of that
is long gone.
don't know this one.
but, it looks like it deals with *Papal* stuff:
Noonan, James-Charles.

Catholic Church

which aren't of particular interest to us Carnotensis-centric yokels.
> Given the dating,
of what, the Papal use?
butbut, i'm only interested in the Chartrain use --broadly considered.
>I wouldn't think to find it in Cabrol/Leclerq?
certainly not, if these items --or anything else-- post-date the Carolingian
period.
>Once my reliable daily companion
why, you're just the sort of fellow i'm looking for, Stan.
there is no "Processions" article, per se.
nor is there one on "Tintinabulum."
if anyone has a suggestion as to where to look [in C-L or elsewhere] for
suchlike processional
accessories, i've got a copy near to hand.
