Subject: "Ambergris"
Dear Colleagues,
Two of my industrial design students and I are currently doing a
research /
design project that we call it, "Let's Shape Ambergris". In ancient
Persia,
"Ambergris" (an aromatic substance; ashy in color and pasty in state)
was
used by women to create an aura as well as deodorize the smell of
perspiration. Ambergris has been usually put in approximately
two-centimeter
long capsules, strapped to the neck as an adornment. The capsules were
punched to slightly facilitate the touch between Ambergris and the
user's
skin. When the user perspires, Ambergris is re-activated and creates the
aura.
We are investigating if a meaningful visual interpretation can be
created on
the basis of a scent, using the notion of synaesthesia, trying to find a
connection between visuals and other sensory perceptions.
Any comment / experience / idea? Materials for reading?
Regards,
Mohammad
