medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
According to Donald Lindsay Galbreath, Papal heraldry (2nd ed. London 1972)
27 the pavilion, ombrellino, padiglione or conopeum appeared for the first
time on the 12th c fresco of the Santi Quattro Coronati in Rome. A mosaic of
the time of pope Boniface VIII (1294-1303) at Anagni shows the ombrellino
for the first time as a half opened umbrella. Similar shaped ones can be
seen in the portico of S Maria Maggiore (1300), and on 14th c fresco's in
the chapel of the SS Corporale at Orvieto. By the time of the Council of
Constance it has the old rounded shape again and is very large and at the
time of the council of Basle (1431-39) it is pointed again. It is very
visible in Renaissance paintings, but the first use in heraldry was during
the time of Martin V and went on from there until now.
Nothing on the tintinnabulum in this book as that is not a papal heraldic
charge but belongs to cathedrals. As a gift from the pope, indeed, but not
carried by or in front of him. AFAIK, that is.

One place we might try is the ceremonial book of /Constantine/ VII
Porphyrogennetos.
Or even the Ordines Romani, for early texts. I tend to come at the
papal ceremonial from the late end of things, using Ahostino Patrizzi &
the later masters of ceremonies.
